The Graphic Novel

Lumi Reef® is a story about three underwater friends - Lula, Pip, and Kiko. Publishing in 2024, this illustrated novel is a tale about the importance of marine conservation, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship.

In a faraway galaxy, there is a glistening blue planet.

Lumi Reef® is an underwater metropolis home to many sentient species. The inhabitants are a peaceful people that includes the Angels, who study science and medicine, the Squids, who are aquaculturists, and the Crabs, who are builders and engineers.

In a faraway reef called Quartzkeep live the Wyrms, a belligerent, technologically advanced species whose ecosystem is on the brink of collapse. They seek to invade Lumi Reef® for more resources.

Lula

The Pink Sea Angel

Lula is inspired by Clione limacina, commonly known as the Sea Angel, which is a free-swimming pelagic slug found in the Arctic Ocean.

She is an adventurous and kind-hearted individual, and leader of the troublesome trio.

Pip

The Green Squid

Pip is inspired by the Bobtail Squid (Sepiola atlantica), a bioluminescent squid that is able to change the color and texture of its skin to reflect mental states or communicate with its peers.

Pip is cunning and calculated, and often has to use his wits to get the group out of trouble!

Kiko

The Blue Crab

Kiko is based on the Hermit Crab (Dardanus Tinctor), which are extremely industrious and creative creatures. They are frequently observed decorating their shells and creating sand sculptures.

Kiko often finds himself in sticky situations due to his clumsy nature. However, he is fiercely loyal and stands by his friends through thick and thin!

Tipli

The Pink-Feathered Wyrm

Tipli is inspired by the Bobbit Worm (Eunice aphroditois), a fearsome predatory worm that lives in the sandbed.

Tipli’s species is the antagonist of this story, who try to invade Lumi Reef to expand their resources. However, Tipli is sympathetic to the Lumis, and plays a key role in defending the metropolis.
